Teaching experience
I have around one year of private tutoring experience primarily teaching Maths to students aged approximately 9-16. During this time I have tutored three GCSE Maths students and one Year 11 Maths student as well as working with students on KS2 and KS3-level material. I currently tutor privately and have experience adapting lessons to students with different levels of confidence and mathematical ability. My approach is centred around active problem solving. I generally begin by identifying what a student already understands and where the gaps are rather than assuming that the whole topic needs to be retaught. I then explain the key ideas clearly and work through examples before giving the student questions to attempt independently. As they improve I gradually increase the difficulty and introduce more exam-style questions. I place particular emphasis on understanding rather than memorising procedures without knowing why they work. At the same time I recognise that fluency in basic skills such as arithmetic fractions algebra and times tables is important because weaknesses in these areas can make more advanced topics much harder. With GCSE students I use exam-style questions and past-paper material to develop both subject knowledge and exam technique. I look at common sources of lost marks how to structure working clearly and how to recognise which mathematical method a question requires. For younger students and Year 11 pupils I focus more heavily on core numerical skills problem-solving accuracy and confidence. I try to create a relaxed and encouraging environment where students are comfortable saying when they do not understand something. I do not want students to be afraid of getting questions wrong instead I use mistakes to identify exactly what needs to be improved. I also adapt the pace and difficulty of lessons depending on the student rather than following the same rigid structure with everyone. My main subject is MCSE Maths particularlys although I am also happy to teach KS2 11 and KS3 Maths. I can also offer GCSE Biology and Chemistry. I am comfortable teaching both online and in person in and around Abingdon.
