Much of the one-to-one tutoring involves developing learning strategies that relate directly to the individual student’s way of learning, working with the student to find methods to achieve academic success, and the skills and methods to take examinations successfully. I am able to identify and provide the right resources as a way to mentor each learner as an individual, and endeavour to look at people holistically. Tutoring involves providing individualised support that recognises the different learning methods of each student. One key aspect I have a great deal of experience of is supporting students to understand the technical and literary aspect of questions being asked, therefore supporting confidence building in exam conditions. It requires establishing where support is needed and developing subject-focused lessons with exercises that deal with the specific needs of the individual learner. This involves developing learning strategies that relate directly to the individual student’s way of learning, how they read and engage with language, which helps the student to have the skills and methods to take examinations successfully.
A key personal achievement was supporting a British student with dyslexia and issues with her confidence in areas of English and Reading modules to reach the 93 percentile in the ACT exam.
I am interested in inclusive learning and the potential for all students, developing a specialism to support those with dyslexia and English as a second language. Meanwhile, supporting international students with essay writing, and the different aspect of writing a thesis, I have been able to support MA and PhD students fulfil higher qualification requirements, therefore maintaining an expertise in my specialist subjects.
Having worked with a wide range of students from different backgrounds, I have a mentoring and nurturing approach that is perfectly suited when supporting those who have spent time away from school, for example. Much of my professional teaching role has extended to distant learning when part-time and wanting to ensure the students felt supported. Relevant at this time when students have been outside of usual learning environments, thus may require extra support.
I have taught at a number of further education institutions including Goldsmiths College, University of London and Central School Saint Martins, while my experience working with students in London schools means that I have a supportive, nurturing manner and an excellent knowledge of different curriculums.
I have utilised my experiences and knowledge to create engaging teaching plans. I have devised learning modules and tutorial ideas, taught seminars and lectures on art history, fashion and design, and critical thinking and writing. I recently taught Critical and Contextual Studies on the History of Art and Fine Art A’ Level course at ISCA, in addition working as a one-to-one tutor in English skills and essay writing.
