Communicating online, whether this is for work or education purposes, has become so much more common since the covid-19 pandemic. It provided a way of communicating with others safely. Many teachers had to adapt to this way of learning, and so in turn did the students have to adapt to this way of learning.
For tutoring, online lessons are a great way of delivering lessons, without being face-to-face with a student. An online tutor does exactly what a face-to-face tutor would do: plan lessons, deliver tuition, give homework, and keep up to date with parents and guardians about progression.
How does online tutoring work?
Just like face-to-face tutoring, tutors will create lesson plans, deliver the tuition, and set homework. Doing this via a laptop or tablet could mean that tasks are completed on-screen so that both the student and tutor can see the work being completed. For some tutoring sessions e.g. Biology, digital diagrams may be used to aid understanding. Online tutoring doesn’t differ that much from face-to-face teaching, apart from less travel time, and looking at a person through a screen.
What are the benefits of online tutoring?
Tutoring online can be very effective for many students, with the added benefits of the extra flexibility that is offered. With tutors able to be more adaptable and fit around a student’s schedule. E.g. after extracurricular activities.
When meeting new people, some young children and adults can feel a little worried or nervous, especially as they are likely to be spending around an hour with a new person. Communication via a screen can be less intimidating, as they are in a comfortable environment, and the person is present but through a screen.
As most children nowadays have grown up using technology daily, using technology to learn can be very effective for tutoring. Children can find digital learning more engaging, especially when there are animations, colours and the worksheets are interactive.

Benefits to playing in a musical ensemble
I played in a youth orchestra as a child. It was great fun and very important to my development. I'm now a music tutor and encourage my students to play in a group. Some are quite nervous about playing with other people. To address this, I have written down the ways I benefited from playing in an ensemble.
